Promising Start at Neptune HOR

[sociallocker]This year’s annual Neptune HOR was held on 8th November at Blessington Lakes.  As the Garda Squad arrived at the lake with their boats towed by their Isuzu DMax the weather was looking ominous for the day.  Wet and windy conditions prevailed for the first Head at 11am.  The Garda crews took to the water in a flotilla of small boats.  The women’s crews were in a Coxed Quad while the men’s crews were broken into singles and doubles.  All crews fared well despite the conditions.  Thankfully the rain eased by the start of the second head.  Again, the Garda Crews competed mainly in small boats.  When the results came in, all oars people were happy with their performance.

Club Captain, Damien Kelly won the Mens Intermediate Single while Ronan Allen and Kevin Sheehan came a very good 3rd in the Senior Doubles.  Both Shelia Kenny and Jackie Ryan performed very well in their first races in the 1x with Shelia securing 4th and Jackie securing 5th, having only recently recovered from injury.  The women’s quad of Mary Moore, Liza Galvin, Marie Geraghty and Shelia Kenny were unlucky to be beaten into second place by a very strong Carlow team.

This is the first outing of this season and bodes well for the Garda Squad to continue their success from last year.  Their next outing will be at the Indoor Rowing Championships on 29th November.

Dublin Hor

The 70th Dublin HOR was held on Saturday 22nd March 2014.  Racing from Haypenny Bridge towards Heuston, all crews were up against tough, cold and wet weather conditions for teh first race of the year due to the poor recent weather.  Garda Boat Club had two crews amongt the 42 crews.  All crews were left clutching to the boardwalk for shelter from the elements but when the flag went down it was clear that all crews were anxious for their first race since November 6th. Watched eagerly from the bridges and water by coaches Willie Ryan and Gerry Conway the Garda crews were quick from the blocks.  The mens intermediate coxed 4 finished an impressive 1st position, a clear minute ahead of their competition, with much thanks to their well versed cox Lucy Anne O Sullivan. The Womens Novice 8+ were also steered to victory by their new and able cox Gavin Connolly.  The were chased home by a close UCD.

All crews are now looking forward to the start of the regatta season with Neptune Regatta on 5th Apriland Olive Holden attending Trials at the National Rowing Centre on 29th March.  Hopefully this year will see the blue rise again.
