London Metropolitan Regatta was held at the Olympic Course at Dorney Lake on 30th and 31st May. The Club were delighted to have two Men’s scullers, Club Captain Damien Kelly and Ronan Allen representing the Garda Boat Club at this event.
The Club are proud to announce that Club Captain Damien Kelly won the Intermediate 2 1x finishing in a strong position ahead of Oliver Dix of Leicester Boat Club. Damien is pictured above, collecting The Freeman Cup, wearing his gear which was kindly sponsored by St Paul’s Garda Credit Union. This is the first overseas win for the Garda Boat Club since Caroline Ryan won the Princess Royal Cup at Henley Royal Regatta in 2008.
Ronan Allen finished in third position in his heat of the IM3 1x. This saw him advance to the Repechage where he finished second, narrowly missing a spot in the final of the IM3 1x. This was Ronan’s first overseas event and no doubt the experience will stand to him going forward.
On the second day of racing, both scullers entered races that were a level higher. Ronan raced on the Intermediate 2 singles and narrowly missed out in qualification for the final. Damien raced in the Intermediate 1 single and was narrowly pushed into third position in the last 100m in what could be only described as very testing conditions. Damien and Ronan joined forces to compete in the Men’s Intermediate 2x in a straight final later in that afternoon. Kelly and Allen raced hard in a neck and neck battle all the way down the course. With a photo finish at the line the Garda Crew were beaten into second by only 0.35 seconds by Aberdeen. Overall it was an excellent weekend for the Garda oarsmen and great to see the azure and blue of the Garda Boat Club at the fore of all competitions.
With the Garda College Students travelling to the club to train and the Garda Women’s crew going so well, it is looking very positive for the future of the club. The next outing is Athlone Regatta on Saturday 13th June 2015.
