Limerick Regatta was held at O’Brien’s Bridge on 25th April 2015.  The normally sheltered course blew up some challenging conditions throughout the day but the Regatta went ahead none the less.

The only win for the Garda Club was secured, yet again, by the Women’s Intermediate Four of Sheila Kenny, Jackie Ryan, Mary Moore, Liza Galvin and cox Siobhan Frisby.  Despite a strong performance from Athlunkard, the determined Garda Crew took charge of the final from the start. By the time they approached the line, they had enough of a lead to enjoy their victory on the popular four laned course.

Unfortunately, the valiant efforts of the Garda men were not as lucrative. The first on the water was the Mens Inter Single Sculls which saw Club Captain Damien Kelly along with Ronan Allen and Daire Mac Eoin competing in difficult conditions. Both Daire and Ronan faced stiff opposition in their heats which meant that only Damien progressed to the final.  In the final Damien came up against the talented Sam Mc Keown of Portadown Boat Club.  Damien made a good race of it but finished second to Mc Keown.

Following a long delay due to poor weather, the ladies took to the water in the Womens Inter Single Sculls.  Challenging conditions meant that only Jackie Ryan and Shelia Kenny made it to the final.  The local sculler, Alice O Sullivan from St Michaels took the spoils.  However, there was still plenty of competition between both Jackie and Shelia for the top Garda Sculler.  On this occasion Jackie finished ahead of Shelia, but no doubt the battle will continue until National Championships.

In the afternoon, the men took to the water again in the Men’s Senior Single Sculls.  Damien Kelly made it to the final but faced Mc Keown from Portadown once again. Mc Keown took first place and the Garda Sculler finished in third.  Damien Kelly and Ronan Allen teamed up to form the Men’s Intermediate Double.  They qualified from their heats with relative ease and faced stiff opposition in the final.  A very slick crew from Skibbereen took first place but an immense battle was fought out between Garda and the local club St Michaels for second place.  Coming towards the line, the Garda Crew put on one last push to clinch a well deserved second place.

The next outing for the Garda Squad is Queens Regatta which will be held at Castlewellen on 9th May 2015.
