National Championships, 1977 ~ On 16th July 1977, six crews lined up at the start of the 2,000 metre course for the Irish Senior VIII Championship at the 101st Metropolitan Regatta, Blessington. Garda won a close race by three-quarters of a length from a Neptune/Old Collegians/Lady Victoria composite crew, most of whom were members of the national squad. Trinity, winners of the Ladies Plate at Henley, finished third a length further behind. This was the only time in history that a crew with no changes won a second senior championship and it was just rewards for the hard work of Club Captain Bill Somers. The Sunday Independent reported:

Trinity and the composite eight got away more smartly than Garda, however, Garda had got on terms before the 500 metre mark and had a canvas up on the students by halfway. Increasing their rate to thirty-eight, a Garda spurt pulled them into a three quarter of a length lead and although Trinity managed to pull them back a little nearing the 1,500 metres the students were spent when the composite came through to do battle with Garda. Garda, having worn down the challenge of the defending champions, Trinity, the Henley Ladies Plate winners, by the 1,500 metre mark were in no way extended to repulse a late attack by the composite crew … but Garda effortlessly lifted their rate and cruised home.
