National Championships, 1982 ~ On 17th July 1982, the race for the Irish Senior VIII Championship took place at the 106th Metropolitan Regatta at Blessington Lakes, Wicklow. There was a straight final with Commercial in lane one, Neptune in lane two, Garda in lane three and UCD in lane four. We beat Neptune crew one length, to win our eighth senior title. Such was the wealth of experience in the Garda crew, that Dave Sheedy who was rowing in the two seat, was the only Garda oarsman who had not won a Senior Championship previously. The Irish Independent (18/7/82) reported:

There was more than a tinge of nostalgia as Garda Síochána, welding together their crack Irish Championship winning Elite Coxed Four crew of Friday with some of the club’s ‘Golden Oldies’ added the Irish Elite Eights title to their trophy haul at the concluding stage of Dublin Metropolitan Regatta on Blessington Lake … Garda’s irrepressible combination of experience, power and speed, saw them surge to a length victory over the fancied Neptune with Intermediate Champions UCD three lengths off in third place and gave their number seven man Jim Muldoon the unique distinction of a sixth Irish Eights championship medal over three decades.
