National Championships, 1983 ~ On 16th July 1983, Garda lined up beside Trinity, Neptune and UCD to compete for the Irish Senior VIII Championship at Coosan Point, Athlone. We got off to a great start and at the 250 metre mark we led the field by half a length. By the 500 metre mark we had extended the lead to one and a quarter lengths with Neptune in second place. As the crews passed the half way mark the experienced Garda crew, striking thirty-nine, extended their lead to one and a half lengths. We completed the second half of the course at a rate of thirty-four and came home winners (5.12), one and a half lengths ahead of Neptune, with UCD third and Trinity fourth. By retaining the title, we recorded our ninth Senior VIII Championship win. Interestingly, Jim Muldoon created his own bit of history when he became the first person to win the title on seven occasions in three different decades. Jim’s first win was in 1968.
