Quadrangular, 1968 ~ On 20th July 1968, the International Quadrangular Match was held on Irish water for the first time at Metropolitan Regatta. Despite an impressive performance, the Garda VIII, racing in Irish colours, were beaten by England (Quintin B.C.) by one length. In the coxed IV event, England’s Crowland R.C., winners at Henley, proved too strong with Scotland second and Garda third. The Sunday Independent (21/7/68) reported:
Quintin got away to a flying start and were never caught, although the newly crowned Irish Champions, Garda, put in a strenuous effort just after the halfway mark and managed to cut Quintin’s lead to three-quarters of a length. Garda put in a final finishing spurt in a desperate bid to preserve their unbeaten record this year on Irish water, but the English crew had a length to spare at the gun.
