Under 23 World Championships, 1990 ~ Janette Towey, who was coached by her father Sergeant Gerry Towey from Fermoy Garda Station, won a silver medal at the under 23 World Championships in Ottensheim, Austria. This was the first time that an Irish woman had won a medal at a World Championship event. An unidentified newspaper reported:
Janette Towey, formerly of Fermoy R.C., on her first attempt at the world under 23’s, won a silver medal. Switzerland won the gold, with Janette three seconds behind, followed by Austria.
