World Championships, Yugoslavia ~ The World Championships were held in Bled, Yugoslavia from 4th to the 9th September 1979. The Club’s nomination of a Garda crew to compete in the coxed IV event was not accepted by the Irish Amateur Rowing Union, who decided that we should compete as a coxless IV instead. The crew had very little experience in this category and were unplaced. The Irish Independent (8/8/79) reported:
On the face of it, it would appear that the Garda coxed four, which won the silver medal in front of the Irish squad at Essen, has some grounds for bitter disappointment at being passed over for that event in the World Championships…
Kieran Rooney reported,
The IARU for their part, believe they have made a correct decision. They stress that the National squad crew of Chris Neely, Pat McDonagh, Denis Rice and Frank Moore have only been together for two to three weeks and have great potential.
