Trinity Regatta Saturday 15th April 2017

Trinity Regatta was held at Islandbridge, Dublin 8 on Saturday 15th April 2017.  The famous event on the Rowing Ireland Clendar has been held annually since as far back as 1836, the only exceptions being a few years during World War 1.  Thankfully sunshine graced the day and made it a great event for all spectators.  One of the best races of the day was the Mens Senior Double Sculls, in which the Garda Crew of Damien Kelly and Piers Ryan, claimed victory over the combined composite crew of Shandon and Tralee Boat Club.  The composite crew got ¾ of a length ahead of the Garda Crew off the start but after approximately 1000m the Garda crew had leveled and began to draw away with a lead.  With 250m to go the Garda Crew held a one length lead but a significant push from the composite crew made for a very exciting finish, where the Garda Crew held on to win by just ½ a length.

This is the first win in Garda Colours for Probationer Garda Piers Ryan, who is due to pass out from the Garda College on 24th April 2017 and take up duty at Blanchardstown Garda Station.  Having previously rowed for UCD Boat Club at Senior Level, he changed colours to the Azure and White of the Garda Boat Club when he entered the Garda College.

The Garda Boat Club will be holding an open day for all new probationer Gardaí attached to the DMR in the near future.  Anyone interested in taking up rowing or joining the state of the art gym can contact Club Captain Damien Kelly at captaingsbc@hotmail.com
